Home Remedies for Indigestion

Indigestion can be caused by almost any food you eat, and it often hits you with little to no warning. It may be caused by an overly heavy or acidic meal. Instead of laying on the couch in agony, try these home remedies for indigestion. They can offer quick relief, and some can even prevent indigestion.

Lime and Ginger Tea

Lime and ginger are both proven home remedies for indigestion. When you combine them into this powerful drink, you can ease indigestion symptoms immediately.

  1. Boil 1 cup of water. Add 1 small chunk of ginger to the water.
  2. Steep for 5 minutes. Remove ginger from the tea.
  3. Stir in 1 tablespoon of lime juice and honey.
  4. Drink immediately after a heavy meal.

Hot Lemon Tea

This is one of the preventive home remedies for indigestion. If you know that you will be eating a meal that might upset your stomach, prepare this remedy and drink it immediately before your meal.

  1. Boil 1 cup of water and pour into a tea cup.
  2. Stir in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and honey.
  3. Drink right before a large meal to stave off indigestion.

Garlic and Soya Oil

While this might not be one of the best-smelling home remedies for indigestion, it does work very well. Try it in addition to one of the oral remedies, like the hot lemon tea.

  1. Crush 2 cloves of garlic to release the garlic juice and put in a bowl. Pour 2 tablespoons of soya oil over the garlic.
  2. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to draw out as much garlic juice as possible. Remove the garlic cloves.
  3. Lay down and rub the mixture over your stomach. Continue rubbing until the mixture is absorbed into the skin.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a great neutralizer for acid, making this one of the best home remedies for indigestion caused by an overly acidic meal. It does not taste great, so it is difficult for some people to stomach.

  1. Pour 1 cup of cold water. Stir 1 tablespoon of baking soda into the water.
  2. Continue to stir until it is dissolved.
  3. Pinch your nose and drink the entire glass of water.

Mint Tea

Mint is known for soothing the stomach, which is why many people end a meal with a stick of gum. This mint tea will go right to your stomach and cure your indigestion. The honey in this tea helps ease your indigestion too.

  1. Boil 1 cup of water. Add 1 teaspoon of dried mint to the water. Steep the tea for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Strain the mint leaves out of the tea. Stir in 1 teaspoon of honey.
  3. Drink tea immediately for indigestion relief.

Grapes

The natural sugars present in grapes can ease the indigestion caused by heavy, oily, and acidic meals. As soon as you finish a meal that is causing you discomfort, wash and eat a handful of grapes. The extra hydration in grapes will help flush toxins out of your body, as well.

Oranges

No one is quite sure why oranges are such an effective home remedy for indigestion, but eating 1 whole orange after a heavy meal can help ease indigestion symptoms. Try to eat the orange as soon as you feel indigestion symptoms coming on. If you do not like eating anything else after eating a large meal, consider drinking a glass of freshly-squeezed no-sugar-added orange juice after a meal.
